Whether couples can start a marriage license application online.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Find your county office on your state page and check whether it takes online applications or appointments.
  2. Gather ID for both partners and any papers your county asks for.
  3. Apply, pay the fee and get the license.
  4. Wait out any waiting period, marry before the license expires, and have it returned to the county.

Both partners usually apply together

At least 30 states expect both partners to appear when the license is issued. Your state page says whether one partner can apply alone.

Next, check the waiting period and the fee in your state.
